Spotify Spotlight: REPACK EP by Ihasamic! x Wovensound
STORY: Farhan Shafie
21 January 2021
One is a producer with an extensive list of collaborations, and whose moniker pays loving tribute to all forms of music, especially hip-hop and rap. The other is a rapper with a penchant for poetry and creating stunning visual pieces.
Together, Wovensound and Ihasamic! are redefining the visual album format with their brilliant 4-track EP "REPACK". Filled with infectious lo-fi sounds, "Repack" is equal parts nostalgia and wistful daydreaming.
Mirroring the musical journey is also a short film that serves as a visual accompaniment to the songs. Directed by Ihasamic! (an art director by day), it tells the journey of a person struggling with his mental health.
The endless loop of life and how draining it can be with the same experiences and internal conversations, repackaged, are hauntingly captured in this 10-minute clip.
“These 4 tracks were meant to be like a short, reflective therapy session,” Wovensound shares. “They cover the theme of repetition and mundane cycles that we go through daily, on a much more personal level - an internalised conflict instead of an externalised struggle."
He adds, "Ihasamic! wanted it to play like a slice-of-life story that loops daily, when repackaged into a different vessel: Would you be able to tell the same shit apart on different days? That’s the question that popped into our head during the entire production process.”
Sounds like: The alternative hip-hop artistry of Brockhampton, the lyrical flair of Tyler The Creator and the soothing lo-fi moods of your favourite chill-hop YouTube channels.
Featuring local artists CHAE, Shai and Raina Sum, "REPACK" is an ambitious project rarely seen in the Singapore hip-hop scene. “Sonically the EP is played in a cinematic way - four acts one after another - and makes sense when repeated start to end in a loop," Ihasamic! says. "The visuals of the accompanying short film complete it.”
